Better Choices for Baby Wash

By May 5, 2021September 21st, 2021No Comments

Why look for better products when it comes to baby wash/lotions❓

????????Infant skin absorbs faster and is thinner than adult skin. This makes babies more vulnerable to the ingredients used on their skin. According to the EPA, “children have a greater ratio of surface area to body weight than adults which may lead to increased dermal absorption. Children’s tissues, organs, and biological systems are still developing, with several stages of rapid growth and development occurring from infancy to adolescence. This rapid development and immaturity of body organs and systems predisposes children to potentially more severe consequences within certain age ranges and windows of vulnerability.” (1,2)

As I stated in yesterday’s post, when we choose to support companies that provide better products, the big companies start noticing! In 2018 Johnson’s changed their baby line of products (for the first time since 1973) to reduce the amount of ingredients by 50%! (3)

Here’s the thing… after they reformulated, many other baby companies did too. Most baby washes and lotions are now free of parabens, phthalates, and dyes.

But, one thing left in baby products are PEGs. Now these are not a HUGE concern, but if I have two baby washes similar in price sitting right next to each other on the store shelf and one has PEGs and the other doesn’t, I want the one without.

PEG’s (polyethylene glycols) are petroleum-based compounds used in personal care products. PEGs are typically followed by a number indicating how many units of ethylene glycol they contain, for example PEG-4. The lower the number, the more easily the compound is absorbed into skin.

PEG’s are synthetic chemicals that may be contaminated by the presence of 1,4-dioxane, a chemical that the U.S. government has identified as a probable human carcinogen. Exposure to PEGs and trace amounts of 1,4-dioxne can lead to a number of health concerns. (4)

**According to some sites, Shea Moisture above is not the “best” choice out there but it’s the “best” choice at Walmart stores.
