Hair Dye & Better Choices

By January 24, 2020No Comments

?Beauty products – hair dye

Many enjoy the beauty of coloring their hair. So this post is purely to educate once again, not to say STOP doing it or to shame/guilt you.

In 2006, the European Commission banned 22 hair dye substances, including coal tar, due to customer safety concerns. As of February 22, 2020, Europe has banned another common dye ingredient due it being unsafe: 2-Chloro-p-Phenylenediamine (this gives violet/red tones). (1)

In the US, the only thing regarding coal tar in hair dyes required by the FDA is that the product needs to have a warning label. This warning label states that the product contains ingredients that may cause skin irritation and the consumer should do a preliminary test.(2)

A study published December 4, 2019 in the International Journal of Cancer found that “women who use permanent hair dye and chemical straighteners have a higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who don’t use these products.”
.
Dale Sandler, PhD, chief of the NIEHS Epidemiology Branch did say though “We are exposed to many things that could potentially contribute to breast cancer, and it is unlikely that any single factor explains a woman’s risk. While it is too early to make a recommendation, avoiding these chemicals might be one more thing women can do to reduce their risk of breast cancer.” (3)

A few hair dye ingredients to watch out for:

1️⃣PPD para-phenylenediame is made from coal tar, a petroleum derived chemical. It can cause eye and skin irritation, vertigo, tremors and coma. (4)

2️⃣DMDM Hydantoin is a preservative that is a formaldehyde releaser that can cause skin irritation & affect the immune system. (5)

3️⃣Resorcinol is a dye that can affect the endocrine system.(6)

?The first picture includes a few ideas of brands out there. Other ideas are to use colored shampoos, order dyes from the EU, or talk to your hair stylist about their safe color options.
