Men & Phthalates

By June 26, 2021No Comments

????Fathers Day????

Men can be affected by phthalates too. Not just women. Phthalates are endocrine disruptors (mimics your real hormones, so they can’t do their full job).

The better options don’t have the ingredients “to watch for” in the swap category. But they still contain phenoxyethanol, potassium hydroxide, or a few other ingredients which are controversial as to whether or not they are nourishing to the body or not.

“To watch for” ingredients in shaving cream and aftershave are:
Artificial dyes
Phthalates (found in fragrance)
Formaldehyde releasors

Info about phthalates:

1️⃣Coined, the “everywhere chemical”, phthalates are human-made chemicals,  hidden under terms like “fragrances”, “parfum”, and are found in everything from plastics to personal and cleaning products to home goods, etc.

2️⃣The general exposure to endocrine disruptors, including phthalates, is considered as one of the reasons for diminished sperm count and deteriorated sperm quality, which may lead to infertility and higher incidence of congenital malformations of the genital tract.(1)

3️⃣Studies and recent research have linked phthalate exposure to blood levels of low testosterone in almost 15,000 men nationwide.
-The men who were 40 years and younger were exposed via personal care products.(2)

4️⃣One Harvard study showed that a single use of cologne can significantly increase the DEP, phthalates, in his body! (3)

5️⃣BUT- we can control what products we choose to buy and which companies to support.  We can choose to buy products (especially beauty products) without the phthalates.

*this is not a comprehensive list. Just some suggestions!
