Mother’s Day: Beauty Items

?Mother’s Day Gift Ideas? – Non toxic beauty products.

Make up, nail polish, and beauty products are all great gifts to give to a mom. What about giving non toxic products this year?

The problem with putting on multiple beauty products each day is the amount of different chemicals contained in those products. Why do I care? Because I realized when healing, that my beauty products had a role to play with my hormonal imbalance. So anything not nourishing to my body was replaced with a better choice beauty products.

For example, makeup can have a number of toxins such as dyes, heavy metals or parabens. Parabens are a preservative that are an endocrine disruptor that can be absorbed through the skin, blood and digestive system. In 2014, Europe banned multiple parabens in their products but they are still allowed in the US. (1,2)

Formaldehyde releasors are also found in makeup. This means it releases a small amount of formaldehyde over time. They are being used as a preservative. An example of one is diazolidinyl urea seen in some mascara. (3)

Pictured are some of my favorite brands that do not have harsh chemicals.

Nail polish can be found with a variety of chemicals from DBP to formaldehyde you benzophenone-1. DBP(dimethyl phthalate) is a phthalate used to reduce the cracking of the polish. DBP is is listed by the EU as an endocrine-disruption compound of high concern. Benzophenone-1 is also considered an endocrine disruptor and the IARC classifies it as possibly carcinogenic. (4,5)

Just FYI…
3-free nail polishes do not have formaldehyde, DBP, or toluene.

5-free has no formaldehyde, DBP, toluene as well as formaldehyde resin & camphor.

7-free means it doesnt have formaldehyde, DBP, toluene, formaldehyde resin, camphor, plus no Xylene and TPHP.

Sunless tanning lotion is a beauty product that is not regulated by the FDA. DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is the chemical used to help create pigment. Using natural DHA, which comes from sugar cane/beets, is a better option than products containing synthetic DHA.(6)
