Did you know the average person will spend about 26 years of their life sleeping. Crazy, right?!?
I’ve had my mattress for 20+ years and figured it was time to get a new one. Plus I just read an article where employees have to wear masks in some mattress factories. My thought was… if they can’t breathe those materials in while working, why should I be breathing those materials in while sleeping?
While you sleep, your body is in a state of parasympathetic dominance (i.e. rest and digest mode). This time of restoration should not be a time that toxins are introduced into the body. 1
Did you know, conventional mattresses contain ?? things like:
VOC’s (volatile organic compounds)
flame retardants (which wool can be used as a natural fire retardant)
These toxins may affect the brain, respiratory systems and increase the risk of cancer. 2,3
Mattresses have come a long way in the last few years ??.
Here are some good certifications to consider when choosing one:
1️⃣GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): with this label, the product must contain more than 95% of certified organic raw material. The plantation to the final retailer must be certified.
2️⃣GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): These products are made with fiber and fabrics that meet the USDA’s National Organic Program standards and all other components must meet stringent non-toxic standards.
3️⃣OEKO TEX Standard 100 certification: This does not mean the mattress is organic, although they can have this certification. Organic is for the raw materials used. OEKO TEX Standard refers to the manufacturing process. This is an independent, third party testing and there are over 100 substances (like allergenic dyes, pesticides, heavy metals and formaldehyde) that are restricted or prohibited.
4️⃣GreenGuard Gold Certification:
Products go through rigorous testing for VOC’s, emissions, ozone, phthalates and formaldehyde. Products are tested for over 360 distinct chemicals.
After researching, I decided to team up with Avocado Mattress since they meet all of these certifications and more. Here is to better and clean sleep!
