Podcast with Dr. B

A podcast about the gut with a gastroenterologist @theguthealthmd. This is such a good one to listen to!

A few thoughts from the podcast:

1️⃣Mental health and gut/brain connection:

In a December 2020 study, they found that specific microbes were enhanced in those suffering with major depression. Those microbes ended up affecting the neurotransmitter (which is effectively a hormone that affects our mood) GABA, which is a valuable anti-anxiety neurotransmitter.

What foods help with mental health?
Foods that help with anxiety specifically are: fiber, omega 3 fatty acids, magnesium, chia seeds, flax seeds, hemp seeds and walnuts.

The gut is part of the endocrine system that is involved in estrogen balance within the body. An enzyme produced by the microbes in the gut is called Beta-glucuronidase; this enzyme helps maintain that estrogen balance. When there is excess estrogen in the body, there is the potential for disease to manifest. Excess estrogen related diseases are: endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia and breast, ovarian & endometrial cancers.

Calories vary by each individual person and how their gut processes it. Multiple studies show that twins with different gut microbiomes had a major effect on weight. In twins, their human genetics were literally the same but their microbiomes were only 34% similar! The microbiome interacts with metabolism and that affects our blood sugar, blood lipids and weight balance. This is why the weight can vary between some twins.
