SIMPLE DINNERS: Salmon with Pesto

SIMPLE DINNERS – Salmon with pesto sauce on it. Takes 1 minute to prepare. Then you can cook in the oven at 400 for 20 mins or bbq it!

Salmon is ranked as one of the healthiest foods to eat but also ranked as one of the worst foods to eat.

WHAT and WHY❓

Salmon is a great lean protein full of omega 3s, vit D, vit Bs, healthy minerals, and more. (1)

Farmed salmon is raised in sea cages under controlled conditions, and therefore have quite a few problems. (2 exceptions to farmed fish are Verlasso Salmon & Whole Food’s salmon). (2)

PROBLEMS:
1️⃣Due to the overcrowding in the cages or nets, contamination takes place. The EWG did a test where they examined hundreds of salmon in grocery stores and about 70% of them were contaminated with cancer causing polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and the EWG classified their levels as “those that raise health related concern.” (2)

2️⃣ The salmon on these farms are given feed that turn them pink. This feed is banned in the UK, due to one of the chemicals in it, called canthaxanthin. Wild salmon naturally turn pink from feeding on krill. Farmed salmon is now all together banned in Australia and New Zealand. (3)

3️⃣ These salmon are also given antibiotics to help control the spread of disease due to the overcrowding. According to the CDC, as a result of eating large quantities of antibiotic-filled meat and fish, diseases are becoming resistant to antibiotic treatment. In the United States alone, 2 million people are infected with drug-resistant superbugs, and these superbugs kill at least 23,000 each year. Pneumonia is an example of an illness that can now survive antibiotic treatment. (4,5)

4️⃣ Farmed salmon has 11 times the amount of dioxins as wild salmon. The World Health Organization puts dioxins on their top 12 list of chemicals to avoid. Because they are carcinogenic, endocrine disrupters, and their half life in our cells is 7 to 11 years. ? (6)

5️⃣ Farmed salmons’ omega 6 to omega 3 ratio is 6:3. Wild salmons ratio is 1:11. Remember we need omega 6s and 3s, but we want them in a balanced ratio or omega 3s higher. Our American diet is already high in omega 6s.(7)
