Sugars, sugar alcohols, artificial sweeteners. It can all be so confusing.
A few simple tips:
????????Beet sugar- 99.9% of sugar beets that are harvested in the US are GMO sugar beets. More than half the granulated sugar packaged for grocery stores shelves is made from those GMO sugar beets.(1)
????????Artificial sweeteners are linked to a decrease in the beneficial microbiota found in the gut as well as weight gain and an increase in IBS (2)
????????Organic cane sugar is not GMO or sprayed with glyphosate.
????????Monk fruit and stevia originate from plants and are zero calorie which makes them a better choice than artificial sweeteners. They also don’t impact blood sugar levels so they may be a good option for diabetics. However, they’re often combined with other sweeteners like dextrose. (3)
????????Sugar alcohols include xylitol, erythritol and mannitol. These do not raise blood sugar levels but can be hard for some to digest and can upset the stomach.(4)
????????Coconut sugar is lower glycemic than white sugar and contains some vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. It also has inulin, a fiber that helps the gut.(5)
????????Raw honey and pure maple syrup are both sugars, but at least they contain antioxidants and prebiotic oligosaccharides that help feed the good bacteria in the gut. (6)
